AI and Cybersecurity Risk in the Financial Services Industry
The financial sector has always been a prime target for cyberattacks. Today, AI (artificial intelligence) adoption is accelerating across banks, credit unions, lenders, trading firms, fintech, and payment processors. AI helps improve fraud detection, risk scoring, credit decisioning, customer service, and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) surveillance. But the same innovations also create new vulnerabilities.
Attackers now use AI to test stolen credentials at scale, generate realistic phishing messages, automate wire-fraud attempts, and probe financial APIs for gaps. The result is a rising wave of advanced attacks that blend automation, social engineering, and deep technical exploitation.
This shift comes at a time when regulators expect more from financial institutions. The SEC, OCC, FDIC, and Federal Reserve have strengthened expectations around operational resilience, incident preparedness, and third-party risk. Many organizations are still adapting to new rules like the SEC’s cyber-incident disclosure requirements for public companies, which require timely reporting of material breaches.

AI complicates compliance with these rules because many AI tools create new forms of data exposure, often involving customer financial data, behavioral analytics, or identity signals. A common example is the accidental use of non-financial-grade, unsecured AI tools to process customer information. Financial institutions must ensure that any AI technologies, data flows, and vendors meet the same security, privacy, encryption, logging, and oversight requirements as core banking systems.
Recent Breaches
Financial institutions continue to experience major incidents:
- The 2024-2025 Snowflake-related breach exposed customer data from multiple large financial and fintech companies due to poor credential hygiene and a lack of MFA.
- In 2023, ION Trading suffered a ransomware attack that disrupted global derivatives trading, affecting dozens of financial institutions and causing widespread operational delays.
- Several banks have publicly acknowledged AI-driven phishing and fraud attempts that imitate internal employees or executives with highly convincing messages.
These events highlight a broader trend. Financial institutions remain attractive targets because attackers know the data is sensitive, regulated, and highly monetizable.
How Banks and Financial Institutions Need to Adapt
Financial organizations can no longer treat cybersecurity and AI risk as separate topics. They must bring them together through governance, testing, and strong vendor controls.
Suggested approaches:
- Treating AI systems as part of the regulated risk surface
- Strengthening identity security and MFA everywhere
- Conducting adversarial testing of AI systems and APIs
- Enhancing insider-risk programs, especially with AI-enabled automation
- Ensuring strong vendor oversight and model-risk management
- Maintaining an updated, well-rehearsed incident response plan (IRP)
- Applying a risk-based approach that balances security with operational needs
